Interview with Faustine Martin

"My name is Faustine, I'm 34 years old, and a new mom for the past 9 months. I'm a fashion photographer and I live in the south of France with Finn (the dad) and Joe (our little boy)."
What’s your background, and how did you come to specialize in fashion photography?
My background is a bit unusual, before becoming a fashion photographer, I studied pharmacy for 7 years. Photography has always been a deep passion of mine, but fear of the instability of the profession led me to choose a more traditional path at first. Eventually, after just a few months working in a pharmacy, I realized that life wasn’t for me. I dropped everything and took the plunge “just to see.” It might sound like a risky bet, but honestly, it was the perfect time. I was just starting out in adult life, with few responsibilities. Things took off pretty quickly. Thanks to social media and word of mouth, I built a small local clientele early on, and it grew from there.
You’ve recently become parents: How would you describe your family life today?
Sweet. We’re lucky to have time and relatively flexible schedules. Finn is a model, so we’re kind of on the same rhythm. Sometimes it makes organizing things really tricky, but most of the time it allows us to spend a lot of quality time together and watch Joe grow up.

What does a typical day look like for you, balancing photography projects and family life? Do you have a particular system to juggle both?
The great thing about our jobs is that no two days are the same. We’ve learned to be really adaptable. I travel often, but I was very committed to breastfeeding Joe for as long as possible, and the idea of being away from him overnight was really hard for me. So we made it a priority for the whole family to travel together whenever possible. It creates beautiful memories and allows us to break out of our routine together. We've been to Paris, Morocco, Italy, and Spain. Rather than trying to balance two separate lives, I’ve chosen to blend them as much as possible. I’m only just now starting to travel alone again.
Is there an activity or a family moment that you particularly enjoy at home? A simple moment that makes everyone feel good?
Going to the sea. We live very close, and it really saved me at the end of my pregnancy. I gave birth at the end of August, and it was unbearably hot. The sea, every evening at 6 p.m., is what calmed me. During labor, instead of music, I even asked them to play the sound of waves.
The season is just beginning now, but we’re excited for Joe to discover the joy of swimming.
What role does interior decoration play in your daily life? What inspires you when you imagine or transform a space, like in your home renovation project?
Decorating is a big part of my life. I love hunting for vintage pieces and I’m a huge fan of old pottery.
I especially like to let myself be inspired by the energy of a place, and try to respect the soul of each space we settle into.
Our home is a mix of Provence and old Italy. I wanted it to give off that southern vibe, like the family home you return to every year for vacation. Something warm and welcoming. With its imperfections, and easy to maintain. We used lots of tiles, terracotta, and old materials like lime-based paints. I also draw a lot of inspiration from travel, and from details I notice in homes I shoot in for work. Most of all, I give it time and space to evolve. Nothing is ever completely fixed. I love moving objects and furniture around, rediscovering them in different setups.
As a brand, we always think about how families will love and adopt our furniture and objects. Do you keep certain pieces or furniture as if they were treasures from your childhood?
I treat everything like a treasure. Because I take time to find or thrift them, each piece is unique and special. I believe that’s the strength of a home: the love we give to the things we own, and the energy we put into acquiring them.
If you had to summarize your family adventure in one word or phrase, what would it be?
La dolce vita.

What are your favorite places to spend a beautiful family moment? Whether to relax, enjoy good food, or get inspired.
We left Marseille two years ago, and our favorite spots are now in La Ciotat, a small port town nearby. We love having lunch at Molto Mucho or Michel Cantine, grabbing coffee at Café de l’Horloge, and ending with an ice cream at L’Écume des Glaces just next door.
We often go swimming at Liouquet or Saint-Jean to avoid the crowds at the big beaches. And when we want to get away and gain some altitude, the Route des Crêtes is, to me, the most magical place of all (though Finn has a fear of heights and doesn’t always agree with me on that one).
